DIY || Rustic Driftwood Dreamcatcher

Here's a DIY for when your home is in need for a little bohemian bling! These dreamcatchers are so awesome - they're really rustic and unique which means you can be a little rustic whilst you're making them! If you're not so keen on the traditional dream catcher webbing, you can substitute this with an old crochet doily instead. Just stitch it in, vaguely in the middle!

You Will Need

  • driftwood cut into three equal lengths
  • hot glue gun
  • strong string/twine/yarn
  • a large needle
  • beads
  • a tupperware lid (I use this to make my tassels)
  • scissors

Begin by cutting your driftwood into three (roughly) equal lengths.

Lay your three pieces on top of one another in a triangular formation. Apply hot glue to where the pieces meet. Don't worry if the glue shows, we're going to be covering this part up.

To make the frame strong, wrap over and around where the pieces meet. This will reinforce the dreamcatcher, but also hide any glue. Begin by cutting a a meter long piece of string and tie a knot around the corner in the middle of the piece of string so you can wrap from both directions.

Now wrap in a criss crossing motion until you've used up the entire length of string. Tie it off with a few double knots. Repeat with the two remaining corners.

Cut a really long piece of string (around three meters) and thread this through a large needle. Using a needle makes making the traditional webbing much easier, but you can do so without one.

Tie the end of the string to a corner of your driftwood frame.

Now we begin to create the traditional webbing. This is the toughest part to learn, but once you've got it, it's really easy! Using your needle, wrap the string around the frame about two inches from that first knot in the corner and then pass it back under the frame, through the loop.

Repeat this until you have wrapped all the way around the inside of your frame. When you get back to where you started, you need to continue with the same method, but now wrap through the middle of each loop you've just made.

Keep on making your netting. The loops will get smaller and smaller, and this is where using a needle makes things much easier. When you're satisfied with your netting, tie it back on to itself in the middle, using a bit of glue to stick down the end if you think the knot wont hold. If you run out of string at any point whilst making your netting, just cut another long length and tie it on to your first piece. I don't mind knots, but if you do, you could hide it with a bead or feather.

Now it's time to decorate! I strung up some wooden beads and tied them to the corners of my frame and then hung five tassels. To make my tassels, I wrapped a tupperware lid with rope and then used a wrapped knot to finish them off. Then I spaced them out evenly among the beads.

Then I unraveled my tassels to make them crinkly and fluffy.

And that's that!
Let me know if you make this project!
